What are your future goals/career hopes?
I want to enter into the publishing and editing world, and hopefully become a publisher for a major publishing company.
Do you have any advice or is there anything you wish you would have known earlier when you started out at IU?
My advice is to be loud and proud and to not be embarrassed about contributing or asking questions in class. It’s easy for students from lower-income areas to feel uncomfortable in the classroom or to have imposter syndrome, but in reality, the professors and fellow students are all there to support you.
How do you respond to setbacks? Do you have any tips for being resilient?
My tip for resilience is to be kind to yourself and keep pushing forward. Don’t beat yourself up for something that you can no longer change. Think of setbacks as motivation to keep improving yourself, and understand that everyone experiences setbacks.
What do you enjoy most about your IU Experience?
The people! Maybe it’s an IU thing or maybe it’s being in the Midwest, but the people are awesome and so so kind! This includes the professors. I’ve had many great professors that are willing to help when a student is in need.
Why did you choose IU?
IU offered the best total package to me. One reason was the financial support and another reason was the number of programs and majors offered as I went into IU being undecided. It was big enough that I was able to explore my interests without fear of there not being an option once I did find what I wanted to do.
How has the 21st Century Scholars Program helped you succeed?
The 21st Century Scholars Program at IU Bloomington gave me the opportunity to learn and thrive without the financial stress for my family and me. Their resources and staff helped guide me through decisions when I was confused and helped me find my footing at IU. Additionally, their resources provided the information I needed to begin my professional career.
