Where were you from originally? What was it like growing up there? I’m from the Indianapolis north side and stayed in Washington Township for K-12. I grew up playing little league baseball, trying my hand at percussion in middle school, and later enjoying learning how to shoot and edit video for fun at North Central High School. There were a good amount of opportunities for me between making commercials for the high school announcements promoting upcoming sporting events, participating in the summer Freshman orientation program, and joining the Student Council at NC.
Where did you go for undergrad and what made you decide to major in what you did? I went to IU Bloomington, originally planning to major in Business but instead decided to pursue video production (Telecommunications before the Media School merged with journalism). I really enjoyed taking a 3D film class where we shot short films on a custom-built 3D camera rig.
Did you know anything about IU before you made your decision? Three of my siblings went to IU Bloomington so I was able to visit a few times growing up. I was originally planning to attend Wabash College but ultimately wanted a bigger school and thought IU would have a lot of on-campus opportunities.
What was your experience like at IU? Any favorite memories? I loved living at Wright my freshman year and met a lot of people I’m happy to still be friends with today. Outside of classes, I found really cool opportunities to work at IU (Recreational Sports and the Division of Student Affairs) and campus brand ambassadorships for Chipotle and Red Bull. For those, I would do a lot of different grassroots marketing activations by bringing either Chipotle or Red Bull to different campus events for free. One year, Red Bull sponsored a concert series with SZA as the headliner and Lizzo as a supporting act. I got to drive Lizzo and her backup dancers from the venue to their hotel to get ready before the show, and it wasn’t until a few years later when Lizzo really blew up that I realized how cool that was.
What about grad school? I worked at the Kelley School of Business after undergrad and though working with graduate faculty there, decided to pursue an MBA through the Kelley Direct program. It was very convenient as I moved to North Carolina during my program without missing a beat in my coursework. It’s a great program.
How did the 21st Century Scholars Program help you? What was your experience like? Did it help you get where you are now? The 21st Century Scholars Program allowed me to explore my interests, focus on academics, and enjoy a full-college experience without the burden of rigorous financial planning. Without a program like this, I would have a lot of stress figuring out how to pay for college .
What was the best thing about being a 21st Century Scholar? The best thing about being a 21st Century Scholar is the comfort in knowing there are programs to help people like me attend college for free. I didn’t realize how impactful this program was until after graduating, and it makes me happy to know more students are benefitting from the program.
Do you have any advice for current 21st Century Scholars, maybe ones who will be going into the workforce? Learn how to network. Networking is a great tool whether you’re career-focused or not. It is better to know more people in work and in life and you will be surprised with how helpful people can be with their time. Also, learn how to keep learning. College is just one way you can learn but once you graduate, keep making an effort to teach yourself new skills, different ways of doing something, and simply being curious. As cliche as it sounds, just being curious about something I don’t understand has allowed me to meet interesting people and find new passions - all of which have helped me in my professional and personal life.
