Maria Magallanes
Bachelor's of Arts in Chemistry, Indiana University Bloomington
Hometown: Speedway, Indiana
Current Position: Project Management Specialist at Indiana University
About Maria:
I was born in Speedway, Indiana, and moved to Danville when I was nine. Indiana University (IU) quickly felt like home when I first stepped onto campus, a sentiment reinforced by the invaluable support from the 21st Century Scholars Program. My high school chemistry teacher profoundly influenced my decision to major in Chemistry, which has been a long-standing passion of mine. I complimented my major with a minor in Psychology, driven by a genuine interest in understanding human behavior on a deeper level.
During my time at IU, I worked as a Telemetry Tech at Hendricks Regional Health, furthering my commitment to the medical field. Additionally, my involvement in Alpha Phi Omega provided me with leadership opportunities and allowed me to give back through community service, aligning perfectly with my personal and professional goals.
Currently, I am part of the Orr Fellowship, a prestigious two-year post-graduate program that has offered me a supportive community and invaluable resources for professional growth. As the Podcast Scheduling and Outreach Coordinator for the podcast team, I manage various aspects of podcast production and promotion. Through the Orr Fellowship, I am also working at Indiana University as a Project Management Specialist. This role provides me with the unique opportunity to rotate through three different university administration departments, with my current focus on Human Resources. This experience is already providing me with significant insights into the workings of higher education from an administrative perspective.

Favorite Bloomington spot?
My favorite spot in Bloomington was Griffy Lake. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind, whether I was hammocking and studying, hiking, or simply taking a mental health break to reconnect with nature. The serene environment always provided a refreshing escape and a chance to recharge.
