Dhakir Abdullah
Dhakir M. Abdullah, PhD, is an Academic Advisor in the 21st Century Scholars Program at Indiana University Bloomington. Originally from Dadeville, Alabama, he earned his PhD in African American and African Diaspora Studies, with a minor in Sociology, from Indiana University. His research explores the Black Studies Movement at IU Bloomington during the late 1960s and early 1970s, examining how this movement—alongside the administrative leadership of Herman C. Hudson—led to the establishment of the university’s Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies.
As a first-generation college graduate from an economically disadvantaged background, Dhakir is deeply committed to mentorship and student success, particularly for students from historically underrepresented communities. His personal experiences allow him to connect with his advisees in meaningful ways, helping them navigate the challenges of higher education.
Beyond his professional role, Dhakir enjoys reading, biking, hiking, hitting the gym, meditative walks, discovering new restaurants, traveling, visiting museums and bookstores, and spending time with family.
