Advice to underclassmen
"Be involved in multiple things, whether it’s clubs, work, etc.. and diversify your groups—college is the perfect place to find out what you are about, the first time when you can explore on your own outside of your family, yet you are still in a nurturing environment. Also, don't be afraid to try new things and explore possibilities — if something doesn’t feel right, you don’t like your major for example, it’s OK, you will have tough times, just know you can overcome and get through anything, just keep pushing through. You will learn from all those experiences even if they weren't all exactly right for you."
How 21st Century Has Helped You Succeed
Tiffany is happy to have been part of the 21st Century program, not only was it a major source of financial help, but also she was appreciative of the communications she received about the many resources available to scholars like tutoring, study tables, departmental workshops, career events and cultural activities that she otherwise would not have found out about.
Career Interest and plans
Tiffany will work for the CityYear program full time starting this Fall. She has a passion for educating and mentoring others and has a "give back" mindset – the CityYear Americorps program gives her this opportunity.
Tiffany also has her own event planning business (which she started her freshmen year at IU) and she would love to see this take off and grow in the future. This venture involves all aspects of planning parties, weddings, and general events from the venue, down to detailed work on invitations, logos and flyers. Being an entrepreneur is her end goal although it is more of a side job right now.
How you coped with the last year in quarantine
Tiffany was here in Bloomington living off campus-- She had friends living in the same apartment complex so she wasn't completely isolated which really helped a lot. She used the time to reflect on what is important to her in life, and became more focused and disciplined. She made time to practice self care by doing indoor workouts and taking walks around Bloomington with friends. They made sure to take a "chill day" now and then. She would add that to her general list of advice for underclassmen, for overall wellness during and after the pandemic. "Take breaks from school work, even if you think you don't have time for it. You will be more productive and happier by taking out the time to care for yourself and your mental well-being."
Why IU?
IU chose me! When Tiffany learned about her acceptance into the Groups program and what they offered, she was convinced IU was for her. She knows now it was the best choice because of all the diverse activities, events and resources offered to students to help them learn about themselves and grow.
Fun Fact
"I'm more adventurous and open to new things than people would guess. I'm an explorer, and really enjoy fresh experiences and seeing what is out in the world. I want to figure out what I like and what I want to do. You have to be really open in order to figure that out."
