Fall 2018 Newsletter
Welcome Message from Vincent E. Isom, Director of IU 21st Century Scholars Program
Greetings IU 21st Century Scholars! We hope that you had a great summer. We are looking forward to your return to Indiana University Bloomington and to welcome the incoming Class of 2022. This Fall 2018, many of our returning Scholars have traveled overseas during the summer to either Peru or Ghana, while others are concluding their summer internships in various career fields across Indiana. Some Scholars are concluding their summer employment and planning for the next phase of career planning. As Director, I know that each of our returning upperclassmen will be a living example of why the IU 21st Century Scholars Program is successful and provide the necessary encouragement to our incoming freshman class. Your involvement on and off campus shows why taking full advantage of the opportunities presented by our program and through other campus resources pays off.
I would like to plug a few opportunities that will be presented in the newsletter in the upcoming weeks. Several career fairs will be taking place in September and to assist you in being a competitive candidate. We will be providing some preparatory workshops, with our first event on September 11th. We will also be releasing a list of available tutors to support you in the more challenging subjects such as Anatomy, Chemistry, Math, and more. If you want to utilize our free tutor or be a part of a group of serious-minded students striving to earn the highest grade possible, this opportunity is for you. If you are a female 21st Century Scholar in your junior or senior year and looking for mentors from the professional world to engage in career development and advancement, please read about our Pass The Torch Initiative below. Why IU Bloomington?: "I visited Indiana University last Spring 2018 to explore the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program. The IU SPEA MPA program is Ranked #1 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report for nonprofit and public management. Not only did I get to know some of the faculty and staff around IU SPEA but I was also able to explore the campus and the City of Bloomington as a whole. I quickly fell in love with Bloomington's charm and knew it was the place for me!"
Favorite Hangout Place in Bloomington: "Needmore Coffee Roasters...it's a calming coffee shop on the east side of town. I highly recommend stopping by for an amazing pour over or for a great study space!"
Plans after IU: "I plan to pursue a position in program development or outreach at a nonprofit organization that assists youth in their pursuits of education or mental health services."
A Fun Fact About Yourself: "Parks and Recreation is definitely my favorite show of all time - I frequently quote episodes and am a proud owner of a "Pawnee Goddess" t-shirt."
Favorite Quote: "There is power in looking silly and not caring that you do." - Amy Poehler, American actress, producer, and writer
Welcome Marissa J. Cheplick, Leadership Development Specialist at the IU 21st Century Scholars Program
The IU 21st Century Scholars Program is pleased to announce that Marissa J. Cheplick has joined our department as our new Leadership Development Specialist at Indiana University Bloomington. Why IU?: "Indiana University Bloomington was, at first, recommended by my step-mother, who was born and raised in Bloomington and attended Indiana University. I was interested in studying population health and substance use disorders and found the IU Grand Challenge effort to address the emerging epidemic aligned with what I was most interested to study. This event led me to apply to the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the IU School of Public Health."
Favorite place at Bloomington: "On campus, I like the walkway through the IU Beck Chapeland in Bloomington I love going to the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings."
Future plans after IU: "I desire to work in local community health/direct client care in treatment for substance use disorders, and eventually relocate to a major medical health organization in Indianapolis, Indiana."
Fun Fact: "I am a lifelong swimmer and began swimming competitively at the age of 5. My relay team still holds a record at High Point Pool in Falls Church, Virginia."
Favorite Quote: "I promise to be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble." - The Optimist Creed
