Karen M. Franks
Karen M. Franks serves as Lead Academic Advisor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University Bloomington. Prior to her role, Karen was Academic Advisor in the IU 21st Century Scholars Program between 2016 and 2019 at Indiana University Bloomington. During her tenure, Karen advised IU 21st Century Scholars in course selection, course major, and career choice. Karen holds over 20 years of advising experience and nearly 40 years of community engagement as both an undergraduate student and professional staff member on the IU Bloomington campus since 1978. Prior to that time, Karen served as an Academic Advisor at the IU School of Education and was previously University Division Advisor at the IU University Division (UD).
Karen is happily married to Professor Steven Franks of IU Department of Linguistics & IU Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures for over 30 years. Karen holds a B.A. degree in Journalism from Indiana University Bloomington, a B.S. degree in Secondary Education from University of Maryland College Park, and an M.L.S. degree in Library Science from Indiana University Bloomington. Karen and Steven have three children, two IU graduates including Julia ’07 international studies and David ’15 economics and mathematics. David’s twin sister, Elisabeth ’15 BA/MA in anthropology graduated from the University of Edinburgh. Karen is a proud Class of 1982 graduate from the IU School of Journalism, now The Media School at Indiana University Bloomington.
